Weeds is one of those great shows you can catch on TV late at night, and you expect it to be on when nothing else is. It is packed full of humor that almost anyone can relate to, and includes problems that real people can actually understand. Rather than watching some crazy soap opera with twisted story lines, Weeds brings out the humor in everyday live even just by sitting in a coffee shop and chatting with friends.
The series Weeds works great both as a drama and as a comedy. The most obvious thing it could be commended for is its fearless premise of pot dealing and addiction in white suburbia. Using it as a jump-off point, the story launches into highly entertaining situations with oftentimes satirical content. But more than these dark comedic situations, Weeds draws its strength from the complexities ands subtleties of its characters. The main characters, most especially, show enough balance of motivation and sensitivity to avoid becoming two-dimensional. Clever writing and superb acting add points to make it an overall must-see cable show.
Weeds exposes the hypocrisies behind the squeaky clean image of a fictitious upper-middle class suburban community called Agrestic, supposed to be located in Los Angeles, California. Nancy Botwin, played by Mary-Louise Parker, is a cool soccer mom who finds herself suddenly widowed and unable to support her family’s affluent lifestyle in the first season. Adding to the stresses of single-parenthood, as well as the grief and adolescent issues of her sons, she makes the risky and yet brave decision to deal marijuana in the neighborhood. Her business being so lucrative proves the rate of drug addiction in their outwardly safe and morally upright community.
Aside from Nancy Botwin, marijuana itself plays a central role in connecting the lives of the other characters. Combined with the perpetual sense of danger (that becomes more obvious beginning in the second season), the gnawing discontent in a lot of the characters, and numerous compromising situations that are the results of more and more bad decisions—Weeds makes for a highly amusing drama to beat plenty of other TV ‘dramedies.’
Weeds has had three successful seasons on Showtime so far, with the first debuting in August 2005. It has received multiple nominations from the Emmys, Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild, and Satellite, including two wins for lead actress Mary-Louise Parker: a Satellite in 2005 and a Golden Globe in 2006. Weeds was created by Jenji Kohan, produced by Brian Dannelly and Craig Zisk who both double as directors, and also directed by Christopher Misiano.
Playing off Parker’s Nancy Botwin character is another critically noted actress, Elizabeth Perkins, who plays the role of Celia Hodes. Celia is an uptight, image-conscious and manipulative PTA president and later town councilor, who is a friend-turned-enemy of Nancy. Tonye Patano plays Heylia James, a major pot dealer who helps Nancy get started on selling. Romany Malco portrays Conrad Shepard, Heylia’s nephew and Nancy’s business partner. Another major character is Doug Wilson, played by Kevin Nealon, a pothead accountant and councilman who helps Nancy set up a front for her illegal enterprise. Nancy’s troubled sons Shane and Silas are played by Alexander Gould and Hunter Parrish, respectively.
Alessandra Stanley of The New York Times has called Weeds “irreverent and absorbing,” while Tim Goodman of the San Francisco Chronicle has raved that it is “Not only…the best series on Showtime…but it’s also one of the best shows on television, end of story.”
